Here at Tops, we are one of the UK’s leading eco-sustainable childcare providers and big believers in healthy eating. We didn’t like the idea of children being offered sweet and sugary foods every day, so we’ve designed all our meals and desserts with reduced sugar.
Children in full-time childcare receive up to 90% of their daily food intake while at nursery. It is key that the food they are being offered gives them plenty of energy and nutrients through healthy, balanced meals throughout the day. That’s why our Catering Manager, Pete, has created a new menu with significantly reduced sugar and more varied and exciting meals for the children!
We have also introduced vegan and vegetarian meals to our new menu. Not only do these meals provide the children with all the right nutrients, but they are also much better for the environment and more cost-effective. Here at Tops, we do everything we can to maximise the social and environmental outcomes for children, colleagues, and the community, while being financially stable. Introducing vegan and vegetarian meals to the children is a perfect way to do this.
Cheryl Hadland, our Managing Director of Tops Day Nurseries, says “Going vegetarian, is the next natural step for day nurseries committed to providing the best long-term outcomes for children. There is no doubt that humans reducing their meat and fish consumption is the best thing for the planet, and therefore for children’s long-term future. I think we all want our children to be able to look forward to a world where climate change and extinction of species has been controlled and this is something we can do to help.
The vast majority of children love to eat what the other children eat, so nursery is the perfect opportunity to introduce a wide variety of fruits and vegetables to children’s diet in a fun and social way”.
